Main Task: Front Cover, Contents Page, Double Page Spread Mock Ups

Main Task: Unmanipulated Photos

This image will be included on the contents page of the magazine which is representing a mixed music genre.

This image will be on the contents page as the subject as it is representing another genre of music.

I might use this picture on the contents page as I quite like the subject's NVC. But the picture looks slightly dark at the bottom.

I like the pose in this picture and I may possibly use it on the Double Page Spread.

The subject looks casual in this image and it may also be on the contents page. The picture is uneven in colour.

Here we have the subject looking at her prop (ipod). This picture may possibly be included in the magazine.

I might use this picture on the double page spread because I took the picture is a landscape position.

Here the subject is looking at her ipod, this may also be used on the double page spread.

The background is quite dark, so I might not be using this picture for my magazine.

I will be using this picture on my double page spread because the lighting is high key and I like the look of it.

I quite like this picture as you can see the subject smiling at the camera, so I may possibly use it on the contents page of the magazine.

I may also use this picture as here I took a medium long shot of the subject. I might use a smaller version of this picture for the double page spread.

This picture may possibly be used on my magazine's front cover as the lighting is bright and the subject is looking towards the distance.

Main Task: Mood Board

Here is a mood board I created to help me get ideas for my music magazine which will be on the genre 'Pop' as you can clearly see with all the bright colours and some 'pop artists' have been included on this mood board.

Main Task: Case Study of a Publishing House

Harris Publishing, Inc. This company publishes many different magazines, but they appear to be of similar genres. Harris Publishing, Inc publishes 15 different niche magazine titles and 5 speciality events in the niche areas. Harris Publishing, Inc produces the following magazine titles:

1.Potato Grower
2.SnoWest
3.Sugar Producer

As you can see from the titles of the magazines, they are all of similar genres. These magazines are about nature, boats and dirt bikes. They then started to produce other types of magazines about boats, trucks, lifestyle and snowmobiling. These three magazines are the main ones that are published by Harris, Publishing Inc. The audiences that would be targeted for these types of magazines are mostly male adults and female adults also.

This is because the majority of the magazines published by Harris Publishing, Inc are about boats, dirt bikes and nature. And the male target audience are more into those sort of things which is why they are the main target audience. Females would also be interested in this because of the nature magazines which are about home growing and lifestyles. I do not think these magazines would take the interests of younger readers, well maybe for the dirt bikes young males would like them. Other than that I do not think Harris, Publishing Inc publishes many other magazine titles such as the following: boating sportsman, SnoWest, Idaho falls magazine, Potato grower, Pontoon boat and Deckboat magazine, sledheads, playground magazine, sugar producer, houseboat magazine, diesel tech, dirt toys and western turf.

This magazine targets different audiences for every magazine that it makes because they are for different things, for example a man would not want to read a 'playground magazine'. As it does not appeal to his particular interests, he would more likely be more into 'sledheads' because he'll be more into it and would possibly find information that is suitable for his interests. It would also target different audiences with each magazine that it makes because they would need a wider range of people to purchase their magazines for them to be more successful in the publishing industry.

Harris, Publishing Inc does have other business interest such as:
Falls printing which is owned by Harris Publishing, Inc., publishers of quality magazines for over 30 years. The backing and experience of Harris Publishing enables us to offer state-of-the-art equipment and technology to clients, including a 40” eight-color perfecting press, complementing our other presses. They print everything from business cards to magazines, along with providing graphic design and direct mail services.Falls Printing gives clients excellent quality, competitive prices, quick turnaround, personal customer services and much more.

There is also a media institution that might distribute my media product and this company is Conde Nast Digital. This is because they produce a wide range of magazines such as: Vanity Fair, Brides, GQ, GQ Style, House and Garden, Interiors, Stylefinder, Johasens, Glamour, CNTraveller, Easy Living and Vogue. I think they will publish my media product because of the wide range of magazines that they produce; mine will be similar to that.

As you can see from some of these magazines below, (Vanity Fair and Vogue) they are brightly coloured which is what i aim to do with my music magazine that I produce.

Main Task: Profiling Your Audience

Jodie is 16 and loves the genre of Pop/RnB music ever since she was about 12. As she got older she became more into these particular genres. Jodie listens to music all the time, where ever she goes or whatever she does, she's listening to music on her most prized possessi
on she owns which is her ipod. All of Jodie's hobbies revolve around music. Which include buying music, playing music, singing music and talking about music. She buys music every few weeks on itunes, and she also buys about 2-4 albums in HMV every month. Jodie constantly talks about the latest music with her friends in college and out which she never gets bored of doing so. She also plays the guitar and sings covers of her favourite songs which she puts up on her YouTube channel. Jodie looks up to one of her favourite artists and idol who is Justin Bieber, as she says he taught
her to believe and never say never. She has covered almost all of Justin's songs on YouTube with thousands of subscribers. She also loves fashion and sets her own style to suit her personality and the music she's into.

Main Task: Audience Research

Here is a task in which I carried out for the planning and research stage of this task. I had to speak to my target audience which were teenagers. I had to speak to my target audience using electronic means to communicate with them.

To get an idea of what the audience of a music magazine wants, I did some of my own audience research. Here are a list of the questions I asked my audience:

1. What word(s) do you associate with pop music?
2. When looking at a front cover of a magazine, what draws you in, the text or image(s)?
3. Do you think specific genres of music magazines should target only a specific audience or all? If so, which target audience? Children, teens, or adults
?
4. Looking at these different font styles, which one do you think would go well on a pop magazine?
5. Which colour scheme would be more appealing to you on a magazine?
6. Look at these different magazine front covers, which one do you like the most?
7. Looking at these pre-mock up sketches of possible layouts for a magazine front cover, which one do you like best?
8. Would you be interested in reading stories or profiles of upcoming artists?
9. On a contents page do you like to see the features in columns or widely spread?
10. Here are some fonts, which one do you prefer?
11. About how much would you spend on a music magazine? £1, £2, £3, £4
12. Do you like to see a Q & A sections in magazines?
13. What one artist(s)/bands from the following do you listen to? Justin Bieber, Rihanna, LMFAO, Bruno Mars, One Direction.
I then collated the research I found out using MSN messenger and Blackberry Messenger. Here are some of the responses from the people that I asked. The target audience ages ranges from approximately the ages 13-18.
Before I asked the audience questions, I prepared some typhography fonts, and a few possible colour schemes. Along with this I also produced some pre-mock up sketches.

Here are some of the main responses I gathered from the audience of people that I asked.

As you can see here, the majority of people I asked said that the images are what draws them in. Therefore I will also do this when I create my magazine I will also make sure the subject is the main thing that people see when they look at the cover.

There was a mixed response for weather or not magazines should be targeted at a specific audience but the majortiy of people said it shouldn't as everyone can read whatever they like. But I believe that certain magazines should be targeted at only a specific age group as for example: in a kids magazine, there are things like little games and the adverts are produced specifically for thier age group. Which is why, my music magazine will be also targeted at a specific age group because to target a wider range of people would be difficult as there would be content that would not be suitable for younger readers but for older readers it would be fine.

The way of collecting the research has to be electronic and closed questions because people would be telling me different answers and I would need to keep it limited so that my final product would be similar to the decisions made by the target audience.

For the font styles, most people chose Snap ITC, which is good as I also wanted to use this font for my magazine, reason being as it fits in with a sort of 'pop' style to it.

The responses for these were varied so I'll have to come to a desiscion for the colour scheme I will use. I will be using about 3-4 colours and they will be bright as 'pop' is bright.

All of the audience i asked wanted to see a Q & A section in the magazine, so this should be included somewhere on the Double Page Spread. The audience also want to see profiles of upcoming artists which might possibly be included within the magazine. The main price people would pay for a music magazine is about £2-£3 so my music magazine will also be within these price ranges. As many of the audience listen to some of the pop artists/bands I may include album reviews or the charts in the magazine also. The audience research was helpful as I learnt some things I would not have known if i didn't carry this out, so this has helped me greatly for the upcoming magazine that I will produce.

Main Task: Double Page Spread Conventions Diagram

Main Task: Double Page Spread Textual Analysis

The subject's costume here is pretty simple. She is wearing a black tie with a white shirt and this goes well with the background as it is also white. The way she is posing is quite intriguing as she is looking towards the camera with her head slightly tilted up.

As the shot taken here is a medium close up there aren't really any props in this image apart from the ring that she is wearing. It goes well in the double page spread as it is silver and fits in with the background image and colour scheme.

Setting here is not used as there is just a white background. I think this white background goes good with the double page spread as the readers would not get distracted by a huge image in the background. Instead there are a few images that go with the text.

The lighting is high key because it is all bright and there are no dark areas on this double page spread.

NVC-The subject's body language draws the readers in as it is not easy to tell what she is doing.
Her facial expression connotes as if she wants to tell the readers something and her hand signals are drawing in the readers more as she is pulling her tie.

The colour scheme on this double page spread goes very well together because there are only a few colours that are used. These colours are black and white.
The images on the picture are used well on this because there is one main large image on one side of the double page spread, then there are small images on the other side to go along with the text.

Subject's name is written in big at the top of the right hand side of the double page spread. It is written in serif fonts.
There is also a quote from the subject's interview which is placed over the image. A stand-first is also used on this page as they are most usually used on double page spreads.

A drop capital is always used on magazine double page spreads at the start of the first paragraph. The connotation of this is used for emphasis as the reader can know where the paragraph starts. I think it also gives it a good look as the drop capital on this double page spread matches the large font used.

The headline on this double page spread is on one side of the page as the other side's main use is for the main image. It takes up quite a lot of room on this page. There are also by lines but on this page it is placed at the bottom of the page.
This double page spread has only two columns which is usual for a double page spread which consists from 2-4 columns. Also there is a strap line which connotes to the readers what the subject's matter is about.

Main Task: Contents Page Conventions Diagram

Main Task: Front Cover Conventions Diagram

Main Task: Introduction

I'm Sharon and I'm an AS student studying at Christ The King Sixth Form College. I am taking AS media in which I have just been given the task of my main coursework, I will have to produce my own Music Magazine. Along with this, I must also include a front page, contents page and a double page spread.

The music magazine that i will produce is 50% of my coursework. All 3 tasks that I will complete for this coursework is out of 20 marks each. Therefore I will try and complete the magazine to a high standard so I can gain extra marks.

When doing this task I will have to do a range of planning and research which some consist of:
Magazine Conventions Diagrams-These will be my drawings/sketches of what my magazine's final outcome would be like.
Or some ideas to help me plan out what the final design would be.

Audience Research- I will ask my target audience what type of things they would like to see published in the magazine. I will ask them by using social networking.

Magazine Mock Ups- For this I would have to design diferent styles in which I could design my magazine. It has to include, a masthead design, character positions, overall colour schemes, and positioning of cover lines.

Mood Board-For this, I would have to create very similar to a collage which is a range of pictures on one page which would help me to design the music magazine. It will help me to develop and gain ideas for the final outcome.

Unmanipulated Photos-These will be the photos that have not been edited, the ones that were taken in the studio.

Main Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

Denotation
This magazine cover is brightly coloured with the subject (Justin Bieber) looking towards the camera. The shot taken is a medium long shot as it is showing everything apart from his feet, lower leg. In this shot he is standing upright but the shot taken was at an angle. The background is vividly coloured, using green, red and white stripes.

Masthead
The masthead is placed behind his head. It is easy to read as it is in a bold font. No editing techniques were used on the masthead as it is already bold. The letter o's are coloured in yellow as this must be the company's logo-the title. The word 'Billboard' is the company of a magazine brand, they cover many celebrities of all different genre's of music.

Character/Composition/Costume/Mis en Scene
The boy on the magazine cover is the singing teen pop sensation Justin Bieber, Justin is standing quite firm looking towards the camera. His clothing is linked to also his body language. He is wearing a white shirt with buttons, light beige chinos (with his hands in his pockets) and a jean/cowboy style waistcoat. The audience for this magazine would be teen girls as Justin Bieber is on the cover of the magazine.
Justin is not smiling in the shot, just looking at the camera which gives him a more edgy look. Lighting used here is high key because the background and the picture of Justin himself if very bright. Taken in a high lit area.
There is no setting on this cover as the background is of the bright colours.

Cover Lines
There are many cover lines on this particular magazine cover. They connote different things. Each of the cover lines are within the stripes of the background image. The main cover line, is of course about Justin Bieber who is on the front cover. This cover line takes up the whole chest area of him on the magazine cover. The cover line says 'Justin Bieber' and a little line about his christmas album underneath it.

Not all of the cover lines connotes to the music industry, they come across different aspects like technology, film and TV.

The way the cover lines are written are, in different fonts and sizes. The most important would be biggest and the least important smallest.

Target Audience
I think the target audience would be teen girls aged (12-19) as Justin Bieber has millions of fans and want to know everything about him. Which is why I think this is the main target audience for this magazine. The target auidence would most likely know a great deal about Justin or want to know more about him and his christmas album which was released not long ago.

Dateline/Barcode
This was published on the bottom right hand corner of the magazine. The barcode is placed on the bottom left hand corner of the magazine.

Selling Line
I think the selling line for this magazine would be the main cover line which says Justin Bieber as it would immediately appeal to the target audience.

Website Link

This is placed at the very bottom of the magazine in a green font.

Preliminary Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

The denotation of me looking at the college magazine cover automatically brings my attention to the main image and masthead. The main image is of a girl smiling, the shot taken is a mid shot and covers the majority of the magazine excluding the masthead. The background behind the girl is sort of blurred, which looks nice and calm because there is grass and trees.

The college masthead is plain and simple. It is directly above the girls head which in the middle covers the letter 'L' in the centre. There seems to be no blending of the colours for the masthead as it is only red. The font used is a sans serif type font. The magazine cover title reads 'college' so the magazine would mainly be related to college life or possibly a certain college in particular.

There is a dateline on the cover to show when it was published it is very small which is located underneath the masthead.

The girl in the main image is smiling towards the camera, as it is the main image it takes up the majority of the magazine cover excluding the top where the masthead is. To me, the main image stands out as the background behind her is blurry. The girl, herself looks happy in the picture which means the college she goes to is a happy place to be or that she enjoys college life. To the target audience mainly college students; this would make them want to go there as the girl is smiling and the background looks nice and green.

What the girl is wearing in the image is what any typical college girl would most likely wear to college. It is casual wear which is what most people would wear.

Her body language looks friendly; she is smiling towards the camera and standing in an upright position. Her hands are also by her sides, she is probably on college campus as the background behind her has grass and trees. The lighting is high key because it is bright and even.

On this magazine cover there appears to be five cover lines the font for each of their headings are different colours and sizes. Normally on a magazine the cover lines and little stories underneath them would be the same font. Also the bottom two cover lines are overlapping the main image which makes this clash between the main image which is the girl and the cover lines. I think this causes a distraction within the whole magazine cover because all you can see is writing coming off the girls arm lines are relatively the same size. There does not appear to be a main cover line which catches my eye because all of the cover lines are relatively the same size.

There's a barcode at the bottom right hand corner of the magazine which slightly overlaps the main image even though its at the bottom.

On this magazine there is no selling line which is usually above the masthead on most magazines that is meant to appeal to the target audience which in this magazine there was no selling line. There is also no website link on this magazine which means that the publisher of it does not have their own website.

I think that this magazine would appeal to college students both male and female but the majority female around the age of 16-20 who are looking for colleges because the magazine is about college and college life.

Induction: Movie Poster Textual Analysis

I am going to analyse the "Indiana Jones" film poster using image analysis.

Firstly when I look at the poster itself, I see a man standing there with quite a strong posture. The man is Indiana Jones the main character of the movie. His clothes look worn out and dirty as if he hasn't changed them in a while, he's also wearing a hat. The film already seems out dated by just a few of these things noticed. His face also looks dirty and sweaty as if he was walking for a long period of time or was involved in some sort of adventure.

From the poster you can see that Indiana is holding a whip in his left hand, so this gives me a clue that the movie is action/adventure based. Also in his right pocket, it looks as if there's a sword or gun in there. This means there could be some violence within the movie.

Where he's standing it looks as if he's outside a cave. But, like the name of the movie "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull" behind him it looks as if its on fire is the crystal skull. The lighting for the whole poster used is low key lighting because its shadowy and also caves aren't bright.

As from how he's standing Indiana looks brave, this comes across to me straight away from when I look at the poster. His facial expression looks as if he takes no nonsense from anyone. He looks serious and ready for business. His fists are clenched which brings out a more masculine side. He's also making eye contact with the audience which shows he knows his picture was being taken at the time.

Anchorage on the poster is bold, stands out to the rest of the poster as it is in cartoon type looking. (sans serif). They obviously wanted to make the Indiana Jones bit stand out the most because it is the biggest and the colours are most bright and fire related; orange & yellow. The date on the poster is also pretty important so the audience know when the movie is coming out and also its bold and spaced out from the movie title.

Induction: Re-Creation Of a Movie Magazine Front Cover

This is the first task I have been given which was to duplicate an image using the programe Adobe Photoshop. I have experienced using a little bit of photoshop before. Although I am not experienced at using the programe photoshop I did try and attempt to dulpicate the image to the best of my ability.

As you can see from the original and the duplication image I did manage to put the title behind the head which went well. But I was not able to make the writing on either side of the main image become 3D-looking.

There are various things that I would change about my duplicated image; such as being able to make the writing 3D. Also adding a simple barcode image at the bottom right hand corner would have made it look a little more better. I should have included the little circle shape that was on the suit. And the sub title that said "Inception" & "Empire" I could have possibly made it a little more tall looking and darker in colour.

The background doesn't look as nice as I'd like it to look, using the blur tool I blurred out the people in the background as they were not in the original image. From where it says "Plus!" That area did not turn out as great as I thought, meaning I should have been more detialled there with the use of colour and weight in the line tools.
